Nicholas Phung-Zhang

Associate

Nicholas studied law at the National University of Singapore (” NUS “) and graduated in 2024. He completed his pupillage in Cairnhill Law under Mr Derek Kang and was called to the Bar in February 2026.

Prior to his pupillage, and during his studies, Nicholas liked public law and mostly interned in the public service (ostensibly because he found meaning in serving the public). During such internships, apart from being introduced to public servants, he was exposed to community law and the actual problems that lay people face.

Apart from internships, Nicholas was an avid pro-bono volunteer during university. Among other activities, he volunteered actively with the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme and the Legal Aid Scheme for Capital Offences (” LASCO “), eventually being put in charge of LASCO within NUS. It was while participating in such pro bono activities that Nicholas picked up side skills such as rudimentary spoken Malay, which he uses somewhat whenever he travels to Malaya.

Apart from the above, Nicholas is also extremely fluent in Chinese and somewhat knowledgeable in coding, which was picked up from his pre-law days. In fact, Nicholas turned down an offer to study Computer Sciences at NUS ostensibly because he did not want to spend the rest of his working life staring at a computer screen.

During his pupillage, Nicholas was exposed to a variety of cases including criminal and civil litigation, and corporate matters. He finds great meaning in assisting clients with their problems by listening and then troubleshooting them (if the situation calls for it), including at times, solutions which may not be immediately apparent, or which may come from his side skills.

Apart from law, Nicholas is curious and interested in history, and the practices of geography and astronomy. All of which he tries to read up / practice on in his free time if he does have any. Nicholas aims to find time every now and then to get out of the office to see the beauty of the World, which he believes, is fortunately shared with his former pupil master (and current boss) Mr Derek Kang.
